Established on October 12 1991 Alice’s Restaurant takes it’s name from an Arlo Guthrie song and movie from 1968. Alice didn’t have a restaurant then and nor does she now. The owner’s name is Eibhlín. The ethos is the same though, wholesome cooking using the best of ingredients. The meat, ham, chicken and beef is Irish and cooked on the premises. Soups made from locally produced vegetables and herbs, are bought from the local county market when in season and made fresh daily. The brown soda bread is made from Eibhlín’s mothers recipe and this recipe has travelled far and wide with visitors to Ireland bringing it back home with them. Fresh salads are another speciality with the emphasis on wholesomeness using fresh herbs, lemons, seeds, salad leaves and vegetables.
Our confectionery is very popular with all cakes, brownies, tarts etc..cooked by us. The most popular cake is Chocolate Fudge and for years now the same families have ordered it for their celebration cake, be it christening, birthday, communion, confirmation, and now emigration. This cake is now part of their family life. The recipe is Eibhlín’s own. As the food is prepared and cooked by us on the premises we are able to offer advice to people with food intolerances/allergies. Many of our cakes are suitable for coeliacs and the taste is not affected by our altering of recipes. They are all yummy.
Our most popular main course is Lasagne. Eibhlín was taught how to cook this by an Italian member of staff and our Italian customers tell us that we have got it right.
The cafe is also used for the arts. Acoustic music gigs, plays, poetry evenings. book launches. All ideas considered…. Being Irish and raised in the native language it is only natural that Eibhlín speaks it when she can. So conversations in the café can be in Irish, English and Poilsh depending on which members of staff are on duty.
Our coffees, teas ( both loose leaf and tea bags),herbal and fruit tisanes and hot chocolates are organic and fair trade in the main, purchased from our trusted supplier Matthew Algie.
